Lucknow: Lucknow Falcons have transformed their Uttar Pradesh T20 League Season 4 campaign from a shaky beginning into one of the competition’s most compelling turnaround stories. Led by India international Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the Falcons have found their rhythm at precisely the right stage of the tournament, winning three successive matches and establishing themselves among the leading contenders for the title.
After seven league matches, the Falcons have four wins and three defeats, giving them eight points and a positive net run rate of +0.472. They trail only the unbeaten Meerut Mavericks, who have dominated the opening phase of the competition. The Falcons’ recent sequence of results — three consecutive victories — underlines a significant shift in confidence and execution.
The fourth edition of the UPT20 League is being played in a six-team double round-robin format, with each side scheduled to play 10 league matches. Rain and shortened contests have been a recurring feature, particularly at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, making adaptability an important part of the campaign. The Falcons have increasingly demonstrated that adaptability.
From early collapse to sustained momentum
The Falcons began their campaign with a four-wicket defeat to Gorakhpur Lions under the DLS method. Their batting collapsed dramatically to 31/5 in the powerplay before recovering to 94/6 in a 15-over contest. Although the bowling attack kept Gorakhpur under pressure, the total was ultimately too modest.
They responded strongly against Noida Super Kings on August 17, restricting Noida to 136 before completing a three-wicket chase. Abhinandan Singh’s four-wicket haul proved particularly important in setting up the victory.
Against table-toppers Meerut Mavericks on August 19, Lucknow posted an impressive 183/6 but lost by five runs under the DLS method. It was a narrow defeat that nevertheless showed the Falcons could compete with the league’s strongest side.
A setback against Kanpur Superstars followed, with Kanpur chasing down Lucknow’s 146/7 in an 18-over contest. Sameer Rizvi’s 58 guided Kanpur through a tense chase.
The response since then has been emphatic.
The Falcons defeated Noida by 12 runs on August 23, with Abhinandan again making a major impact with four wickets. Ajeet Verma also contributed significantly with the bat.
On August 24, Lucknow overcame defending champions Kashi Rudras by 14 runs under DLS conditions. Mohammad Saif produced a spectacular 89 from 57 balls, including seven sixes, to lift the Falcons to 174/7 before rain interrupted the contest.
They completed back-to-back victories over Kashi on August 25, this time winning by six wickets in a full 20-over contest. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 3/20 and Abhinandan Singh’s 3/16 helped dismiss Kashi for 126. Himanshu Singh then provided the finishing touch with a composed 64 from 41 balls as Lucknow reached 130/4 in 16 overs. The result was the Falcons’ third straight victory.
Bowling has become the Falcons’ biggest weapon
While Lucknow’s batting has taken time to settle, their bowling attack has increasingly become the foundation of the campaign.
At the centre of it is captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar. His ability to extract movement with the new ball has repeatedly put opposition batting orders under immediate pressure. Against Kashi, he struck three times in the powerplay to reduce the defending champions to 28/3 before finishing with 3/20.
The Falcons’ bowling depth has also been crucial. Abhinandan Singh has emerged as one of the team’s most influential performers, producing repeated three- and four-wicket hauls. Akshu Bajwa has provided early breakthroughs, while Navneet Kumar and spinner Vipraj Nigam have added variety.
The combination of Bhuvneshwar’s experience and the energy of the younger seamers has given Lucknow an attack capable of defending competitive totals, even when weather interruptions make conventional T20 strategies difficult.
The challenge now is to maintain that intensity through the middle overs and improve execution at the death. Against high-scoring sides such as Meerut, those phases could ultimately decide whether the Falcons merely qualify for the playoffs or challenge for the trophy.
Batting finding its feet
The batting story has been more uneven, but the trend is clearly improving.
Mohammad Saif has emerged as the standout top-order batter. His 89 against Kashi was arguably one of the most impressive innings of the Falcons’ campaign and demonstrated the combination of power and control the team needs from its opening combination.
Himanshu Singh’s 64 in the latest victory provided another important sign of batting depth. Ajeet Verma, Priyam Garg, Kritagya Singh, Sameer Choudhary and Vipraj Nigam have also made useful contributions at different stages.
The principal concern remains the team’s vulnerability to early wickets. The 31/5 collapse against Gorakhpur remains a reminder of what can happen when the top order fails. Compared with Meerut’s consistently explosive batting, Lucknow still lacks the same volume of high-impact scoring.
However, the last three games have brought greater partnership-building, improved shot selection and more assured finishing.
Bhuvneshwar’s leadership proving decisive
The presence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar has given the Falcons more than just a world-class new-ball bowler. His experience has brought stability to a relatively young group, particularly in rain-affected and pressure situations.
His latest Player of the Match performance against Kashi illustrated that influence perfectly. Bhuvneshwar’s three-wicket burst dismantled the defending champions’ top order and allowed the rest of the bowling unit to attack from a position of strength. The Falcons subsequently completed a straightforward chase.
His leadership will become even more important as the league enters its decisive phase.
The road ahead
Lucknow’s remaining league fixtures include a crucial encounter with Meerut Mavericks on August 29, followed by matches against Gorakhpur Lions on August 30 and Kanpur Superstars on August 31. The schedule gives the Falcons an opportunity to strengthen their position before the playoffs.
The top four teams will qualify for the knockout stage, with the top two receiving the advantage of playing Qualifier 1. The league schedule lists Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator on September 3, Qualifier 2 on September 4 and the final in Kanpur on September 6.
For Lucknow, the immediate objective is clear: convert their current momentum into a top-two finish.
The biggest test will be Meerut. The Mavericks have been the benchmark of the competition, and the Falcons narrowly lost their first meeting despite scoring 183. A victory in the return fixture could significantly alter the psychological balance of the tournament.
A genuine title challenge
The Falcons’ campaign now carries a very different feel from its opening week. Their early batting collapses exposed weaknesses, but successive victories have shown resilience, bowling depth and an ability to learn quickly.
Their greatest strength is the seam attack, led by an experienced captain who continues to influence matches with the new ball. Their biggest question remains whether the batting can produce consistent high scores against the strongest opposition.
If Mohammad Saif and the top order continue to provide solid foundations, while Bhuvneshwar and Abhinandan maintain their current bowling form, Lucknow Falcons have the ingredients for a deep playoff run.
From a stuttering start to one of the league’s fastest-rising teams, the Falcons have turned momentum into belief. With the business end of UPT20 Season 4 approaching, they are no longer simply chasing a playoff place — they are beginning to look like genuine title contenders.
