Lucknow: The Department of Biochemistry at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences successfully organised a two-day ‘Lab Professional Week’ on April 29 and 30, aimed at recognising the vital role of laboratory professionals in healthcare and promoting awareness about quality lab services.
Held under the theme “A Day at the Lab,” the programme featured a series of academic and training sessions, along with interactive competitions and awareness activities. The event began with a welcome address by Dr Vandana Tiwari.
On the first day, sessions focused on sample collection techniques, including central line procedures, phlebotomy techniques, and ABG sample collection, delivered by subject experts. A dedicated session on laboratory quality management covered key topics such as pre-analytical variables, laboratory automation, and critical lab alerts. Participants also took part in the “Biochemistry Brain Battle” quiz competition.
Addressing the gathering, Institute Director Dr C M Singh highlighted that laboratory services form the backbone of the healthcare system, playing a crucial role in accurate diagnosis and timely treatment. Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Vikram Singh emphasised the importance of developing indigenous medical devices in India. The event was also attended by Dean Dr Pradyumna Singh and Medical Superintendent Dr Arvind Singh.

The second day featured a Clinical Chemistry Case-A-Thon, where experts including Dr Amarpreet Kaur, Dr Pratibha Gavel, and Dr Vibhav Nigam presented clinical case studies. This was followed by the “Bio Quest” quiz competition, where a team from AIIMS Gorakhpur secured first place. Students from the Lohia Institute finished second, while participants from King George’s Medical University claimed third position.
The event also included the release of a departmental newsletter and a student role-play demonstrating correct sample collection procedures. More than 250 participants, including MBBS and DNB students, technicians, nursing staff, and researchers, actively engaged in activities such as quizzes, fine arts competitions, poster presentations, case-athons, and educational sessions.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Aastha Sachan. Organisers appreciated the efforts of the organising committee, faculty members, and participants, and emphasised the importance of continuing such knowledge-driven initiatives in the future.
