“Wealth from Milk”: Women-Led Dairy Model Powers Economic Growth in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow – Under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a revolutionary surge in women’s economic empowerment through the dairy sector. The “Lakhpati Didi” initiative has emerged as a transformative model, enabling rural women to become self-reliant while driving the state closer to a trillion-dollar economy.

Through the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihoods Mission (UPSRLM), over 3.25 lakh women across 31 districts are actively participating in milk production and collection, generating a total turnover of ₹5,000 crore. These women collect approximately 10 lakh liters of milk daily, contributing to both household income and the state’s economic growth.

Regional Success Stories

  • Balini Milk Producer Company (Bundelkhand): 2.5 lakh liters/day; turnover ₹2,300 crore
  • Kashi MPCL (Purvanchal): 2 lakh liters/day; turnover ₹750 crore
  • Samarthya MPCL (Central UP): 3 lakh liters/day; turnover ₹1,450 crore
  • Shri Baba Gorakhnath Kripa MPCL (Gorakhpur): 1 lakh liters/day; turnover ₹220 crore
  • Srujani MPCL (Terai region): 1.5 lakh liters/day; turnover ₹250 crore

Collectively, these companies have generated ₹78.34 crore in profits, ensuring sustainable and inclusive economic growth while transforming women into organized economic contributors. Around 50,000 women have reached the “Lakhpati Didi” milestone, exemplifying rural empowerment at scale.

Direct Benefits and Transparency

The initiative ensures weekly or biweekly payments directly into women’s bank accounts via DBT. A fat- and SNF-based pricing mechanism guarantees transparency and trust, boosting participation and confidence. Women are not only producing milk but also taking active roles in the entire dairy value chain, becoming entrepreneurs and decision-makers in their communities.

Driving Inclusive Rural Growth

This women-led dairy model is not only enhancing rural livelihoods but also creating employment opportunities locally, reducing migration, and promoting sustainable development. By transforming milk production into a structured, profit-generating enterprise, UPSRLM has set a benchmark for inclusive rural economic growth, making rural women a pivotal force in Uttar Pradesh’s march toward a trillion-dollar economy.

Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya emphasized that this initiative showcases how women’s empowerment, economic activity, and sustainable growth can be integrated to create a resilient rural economy that benefits entire communities.
