New Delhi | India has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to transform its armed forces by 2047, as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh released the landmark Defence Forces Vision 2047 document on Tuesday. The strategic blueprint outlines how India plans to build a technologically advanced, integrated, and globally respected military power by the time the country celebrates 100 years of independence.
Prepared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff under the Ministry of Defence, the document provides a long-term framework for modernizing the Indian armed forces to effectively tackle emerging security challenges and the changing nature of warfare.
Preparing for the Wars of the Future
Speaking at the launch, Rajnath Singh emphasized that rapid geopolitical shifts and evolving technologies require India’s military to adapt quickly. The Vision 2047 framework aims to prepare the armed forces for future conflicts that will extend beyond traditional land, sea, and air battles.
According to the document, future warfare will increasingly involve space, cyber, information, and cognitive domains, making it essential for India’s military to evolve into a multi-domain force capable of operating simultaneously across different theatres.
Focus on Jointness Among the Three Services
One of the central pillars of the vision is deeper integration among the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. The document stresses that future military operations will require seamless coordination rather than isolated actions by individual services.
In this context, the proposed system of Integrated Theatre Commands has been highlighted as a major structural reform. Under this model, military resources of the three services would be placed under unified commands for specific geographical regions, enabling faster and more coordinated operational responses.
Technology and Innovation at the Core
A major component of Vision 2047 is technological transformation. The roadmap stresses the growing importance of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, drones, cyber warfare capabilities, and data-centric operations.
The document also proposes modernizing military training through simulation-based learning, advanced digital tools, and joint military exercises, enabling personnel to handle complex and technology-driven battlefields more effectively.
Push for Defence Self-Reliance
Another key focus area is strengthening India’s domestic defence ecosystem. The vision aligns closely with national initiatives aimed at reducing dependence on foreign defence imports and promoting indigenous production.

The government plans to encourage greater participation from domestic defence manufacturers, startups, and research institutions to develop advanced weapons systems and military technologies. Officials believe this approach will not only strengthen national security but also boost India’s economy and defence export potential.
Phased Implementation Plan
The roadmap outlines a phased implementation strategy over the next two decades. Initial efforts will focus on improving coordination among the services and initiating structural reforms. Later phases will prioritize technological integration and strengthening the joint command system.
The final objective is to build a fully modernized, integrated, and technologically superior military force by 2047, capable of protecting India’s expanding global interests.
Whole-of-Nation Security Approach
The document also emphasizes a broader “Whole-of-Nation” approach to national security, recognizing that military strength alone is not sufficient to address modern threats. It calls for coordinated efforts involving diplomatic, technological, industrial, and economic capabilities to strengthen India’s overall strategic posture.
The launch event was attended by senior military leadership including Anil Chauhan, Dinesh Tripathi, and A. P. Singh, along with other top officials from the defence establishment.
Building a Global Military Power by 2047
As India approaches the centenary of its independence in 2047, the government aims to position the country not only as a developed economic power but also as a strong and credible military force on the global stage.
Experts say that if effectively implemented, Defence Forces Vision 2047 could significantly reshape the capabilities, structure, and strategic reach of India’s armed forces in the coming decades.
