Lucknow: In a significant development for medical education in Uttar Pradesh, Major General Dr. Amit Devgan has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU), Lucknow. The appointment was approved by Uttar Pradesh Governor and Chancellor Anandiben Patel, with an official order issued from Jan Bhavan.

The appointment brings to an end a prolonged interim phase during which the university had been functioning without a full-time Vice-Chancellor, following the completion of the previous incumbent’s term. The decision is expected to provide much-needed administrative stability and strategic direction to the institution.

A serving Major General in the Indian Army, Dr. Devgan brings with him vast experience in military medical services and healthcare administration. He was previously posted at the Medical Headquarters, Northern Command, and is a qualified pediatrician (child specialist). His professional background reflects a rare blend of clinical expertise and high-level administrative experience, positioning him well to strengthen ABVMU’s academic governance and operational efficiency.

According to official sources, a seven-member selection committee had shortlisted four candidates and forwarded their names to Jan Bhavan for final consideration. After due evaluation, Dr. Devgan was selected and his appointment formally approved.

The Vice-Chancellor’s appointment has been made for a three-year term, in accordance with the prescribed norms. Established to regulate and supervise medical, dental, nursing, paramedical, and allied health education across Uttar Pradesh, ABVMU plays a pivotal role in shaping the state’s healthcare education ecosystem.

University officials and stakeholders have welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence that Dr. Devgan’s leadership, military discipline, and medical expertise will inject fresh momentum into the university’s initiatives in medical education, research, training, and infrastructure development.

Further details regarding Dr. Devgan’s joining date and the transition process are expected to be announced in due course.
