Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak Assures Support to SGPGIMS Vision; Institute to Launch Quaternary Healthcare and AI Initiatives

Lucknow: The vision of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow to strengthen advanced patient care and research has received strong assurance and encouragement from Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak. With government backing, SGPGIMS is set to take a major leap in healthcare delivery by initiating Quaternary healthcare services and integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into medical practice.

Quaternary Healthcare Centre at SGPGIMS

SGPGIMS will establish a Quaternary Healthcare Centre, taking medical services beyond the tertiary level to provide the highest and most advanced form of healthcare. The centre will function as a final referral destination for the most critical and complex cases, offering cutting-edge technologies such as Proton Therapy, ECMO, advanced neuro-interventional procedures, precision oncology and state-of-the-art cellular therapies.

These advanced treatments, which currently compel many Indian patients to seek care abroad, will become accessible within the country. The proposed Quaternary Healthcare Centre will combine high-end medical equipment, strong human resource development and robust research infrastructure, positioning SGPGIMS among the leading global centres of excellence in healthcare.

Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Recognising the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence across sectors, SGPGIMS is also planning to establish a dedicated Centre for AI in Healthcare. With both the Government of India and the Uttar Pradesh government making significant investments to achieve the goals of “Developed India” and “Developed Uttar Pradesh” by 2047, healthcare is set to be a key beneficiary of this technological push.

The AI initiative at SGPGIMS aims to make healthcare services safer, faster, more accurate and more comprehensive. By integrating AI into diagnostics, treatment planning, patient monitoring and research, the institute seeks to future-proof healthcare delivery and contribute to India’s long-term development goals.

Uttar Pradesh Medical College Network (UPMCN)

Another landmark initiative is the Uttar Pradesh Medical College Network (UPMCN), which will create an integrated and interconnected telemedicine ecosystem across medical colleges in the state. Designed on a hub-and-spoke model, UPMCN will enable seamless collaboration through shared expertise, remote tele-consultations, tele-education, Tele-ICU services and centralized data analytics.

This network will ensure that citizens receive expert medical care irrespective of their geographical location. A pilot Tele-ICU project involving six state medical colleges has already been operational for the past one-and-a-half years. In recognition of its impact on patient safety, the project was awarded the Patient Safety Initiative Award in a Public Hospital category by FICCI in 2025.

With these initiatives, backed by the state government’s support, SGPGIMS is poised to redefine advanced healthcare, research and digital integration in Uttar Pradesh, setting new benchmarks for patient care and medical innovation.
