Solar Power Revolution Brings Big Relief to Farmers and Small Businesses; Over 2.75 Lakh Homes Now Powered by Rooftop Systems

Lucknow: A new wave of energy transformation is sweeping across Uttar Pradesh’s rural and backward regions, with the PM Surya Ghar Scheme emerging as a beacon of hope for farmers, small traders, and common households. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has accelerated the implementation of rooftop solar installations, earning a place among the top-performing states in the country.

According to official data, 2,75,936 households in the state have so far installed rooftop solar systems, significantly reducing their dependence on conventional power supply and providing the added benefit of free electricity. Uttar Pradesh now ranks third in installations, behind Gujarat and Maharashtra, while it stands second nationally in total applications.

The scheme’s most transformative impact is being seen in the small business sector. Earlier, power cuts routinely disrupted operations of units such as welding shops, flour mills, kirana stores, barber shops, and mobile repair centres. With the availability of uninterrupted solar-powered energy, these businesses are witnessing smoother operations, stabilized incomes, and enhanced employment opportunities.

For poor and middle-income families, monthly electricity bills have nearly dropped to zero, resulting in 15–20% savings in household expenditure. This financial relief is enabling families to allocate more resources toward education, healthcare, and planned savings.

As of October 31, the state has distributed ₹1,808.09 crore in subsidies, significantly boosting public confidence in the scheme and accelerating rooftop solar adoption.

Major beneficiary districts include Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur Nagar, and Bareilly, which together have installed more than 8,000 rooftop solar units.

  • Lucknow: 4,271 installations
  • Varanasi: 1,672 installations
  • Kanpur Nagar: 1,410 installations
  • Bareilly: 1,145 installations

Meanwhile, installation work continues at a rapid pace in other districts as well, marking a substantial step toward renewable energy adoption and economic empowerment across Uttar Pradesh.
