Lucknow: A poignant theatrical presentation exploring grief, memory and the enduring bond between a mother and her son captivated audiences at the International Buddhist Research Institute in Lucknow on the opening day of a cultural programme organized by Shraddha Manav Seva Kalyan Samiti.
The performance of “Tragedy”, a widely acclaimed play written by noted playwright Manav Kaul, was staged under the skilled direction of veteran theatre artist and Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Achala Bose. The event was supported by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, as part of its cultural promotion initiatives.
The programme commenced with a ceremonial lamp-lighting by distinguished theatre personality and Central Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Surya Mohan Kulshreshtha, former director of the Bhartendu Natya Academy, Lucknow. Addressing the gathering, he extended his blessings and best wishes to the artists and organizers.
At the heart of the play is the deeply emotional story of a son struggling to come to terms with the loss of his mother. Left alone after her passing, he finds himself immersed in memories of her affection, wisdom, habits and the countless moments they shared together.
As the narrative unfolds, the protagonist realizes that he never fully understood the importance of his mother while she was alive. Her absence forces him to confront feelings of regret, loneliness and longing. Through a reflective journey into his past, he contemplates themes of life, death, love and human relationships.
The play poignantly conveys that the love and presence of those we cherish continue to live within us through memories, even after they are gone. It also delivers a universal message about valuing loved ones while they are still with us and expressing affection and gratitude before it is too late.

Director Achala Bose presented the emotional depth of the story with sensitivity and restraint, allowing the audience to connect intimately with the protagonist’s inner world. The production focused less on external events and more on the psychological and emotional journey of grief and remembrance.
Actor Tushar Bajpai Shubham delivered a compelling performance in the central role, bringing authenticity and emotional intensity to the character. His portrayal of a grieving son resonated strongly with the audience, many of whom were visibly moved by the narrative’s emotional honesty.
The production received warm appreciation from theatre enthusiasts and cultural patrons, reaffirming the enduring power of theatre to explore universal human experiences and inspire reflection on the importance of family, love and relationships.
Through its moving storytelling and heartfelt performances, “Tragedy” left audiences with a powerful reminder that while life is transient, the memories and love shared with those closest to us remain everlasting.
