Perth, October 17, 2025 – England fast bowler Mark Wood described his off-season as “frustrating” due to a knee injury that has kept him out of competitive cricket, including the upcoming Ashes 2025 series against Australia.
Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly podcast, Wood revealed that his rehabilitation has been challenging. “The summer was difficult. I was unable to play cricket, and sometimes when you think you’re almost ready, your knee isn’t quite ready. Although I’ve been knocked back a few times, things have been going well in the tent,” he said.
The 35-year-old, who was England’s leading wicket-taker in the 2021–22 Ashes and earned Man of the Match honors at Headingley in 2023, said he is gradually ramping up training to be fit for England’s upcoming New Zealand tour and the Australian leg of the Ashes. “I’m settling in well to New Zealand first, followed by the Australian leg. Hopefully, I’m in good form, bowling well in the nets and in practice, and I’ll be able to contribute to that match [in Perth],” he added.

The Ashes 2025–26 series begins with the first Test at Optus Stadium, Perth, from November 21–25. Subsequent matches are scheduled at The Gabba, Brisbane (Dec 4–8), Adelaide Oval (Dec 17–21), Melbourne Cricket Ground (Dec 25–29), and the final Test at Sydney Cricket Ground (Jan 4–8, 2026).
Despite setbacks, Wood remains cautiously optimistic about his preparation. “The rehab hasn’t been smooth, but I’m feeling more upbeat and confident now,” he said, signaling hope of returning to peak form for England’s campaign Down Under.
