Gen-Z Leads Coup in Madagascar After Weeks of Protests; Army Backs Youth, President Flees Country

Madagascar: In a dramatic political upheaval reminiscent of recent instability in Nepal, Madagascar has witnessed a Gen-Z–led uprising that forced President Andry Rajoelina to flee the country. The youth-driven movement, which began on September 25, 2025, over severe water and electricity shortages, has evolved into a full-scale revolt with military support.

Young Protesters vs. Security Forces

Thousands of young citizens took to the streets demanding basic services and accountability. Clashes broke out between Gen-Z demonstrators and security forces, leading to at least 22 deaths, according to local reports. Citizens allege that the government failed to provide even fundamental amenities.

Sensing growing unrest, President Rajoelina dismissed his government, hoping to defuse tensions. But the move backfired as protests intensified.

Army Joins the Uprising

Rajoelina had warned just a day earlier that the military was preparing a coup. Those fears proved true when CAPSAT, a key army unit, refused orders to open fire on civilians and instead joined the protesters. This shift marked the turning point of the uprising.

President Escapes with Foreign Help

According to Radio France Internationale, President Rajoelina was evacuated on October 12, 2025, aboard a French military aircraft, reportedly at the request of French President Emmanuel Macron. He is now believed to be in exile.

The opposition confirmed the president’s departure, stating he had become isolated and powerless after weeks of relentless youth protests backed by sections of the military.

Rajoelina’s Political Journey

  • 2009: First seized power with military support
  • 2014: Stepped down
  • 2018: Returned to power through elections
  • 2025: Ousted by Gen-Z uprising and army defection

What Triggered the Revolt?

The Gen-Z movement began over chronic shortages of water and electricity, but quickly grew into a broader call for economic justice, transparency, and political reform. The youth accuse the government of corruption and neglect.

A Historic Moment for Africa

This rare modern coup led by Generation Z, supported by the armed forces, signals a major political shift in Madagascar and raises concerns about growing youth frustration across Africa.

With the president gone and the army divided, Madagascar stands at a critical crossroads, as the world watches to see what new leadership may emerge.
