Kanpur: In a significant milestone for surgical innovation in the city, Regency Health Kanpur has successfully performed its first scar-free thyroid surgery using the advanced Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA). The procedure marks a breakthrough in minimally invasive surgery, offering patients effective treatment without visible neck scars.
The complex surgery was performed by Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology, Dr. Jitin Yadav, who led the medical team in successfully treating a challenging case of thyroid cancer using this advanced technique.
The patient had previously undergone a thyroid lobectomy, in which part of the thyroid gland was removed. Later, she was diagnosed with follicular carcinoma, a type of thyroid cancer. Considering the need for a complete thyroidectomy to remove the remaining thyroid tissue, doctors faced a technically demanding situation due to the previous surgery in the same area, requiring precise planning and execution.
TOETVA is an advanced minimally invasive surgical technique that allows surgeons to access the thyroid gland through the oral vestibule, the inner part of the mouth between the lips and gums. Small incisions inside the mouth enable the removal of the thyroid gland without any external neck incision, thereby eliminating visible scars while maintaining oncological safety. The technique is increasingly being adopted worldwide for its cosmetic benefits and faster recovery outcomes.
Explaining the procedure, Dr. Jitin Yadav said, “Technically, this was a challenging case due to the patient’s previous surgery and the need for a complete thyroidectomy. With TOETVA, we were able to safely remove the remaining thyroid tissue while completely avoiding a neck incision. This represents a major shift towards more patient-centric surgical care, where we aim for better clinical outcomes with minimal physical impact on the patient.”

He further added, “Minimally invasive techniques like TOETVA are transforming thyroid surgery. They are not only effective in treating the disease but also significantly reduce visible scarring, which is very important for many patients. With proper planning and expert care, we can treat cancer effectively while improving the patient’s quality of life after surgery.”
The surgery was completed without complications, and the patient’s recovery has been smooth and encouraging. Post-operative reports indicate stable parathyroid hormone and calcium levels—key indicators of healthy recovery after thyroid surgery. The patient continues to do well under regular follow-up care.
Dr. Yadav also acknowledged the crucial role of the anesthesia and operation theatre teams, stating that their coordination was vital to the success of the procedure.
This achievement highlights the growing adoption of advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques in Kanpur and reinforces Regency Health’s commitment to modern, patient-centered healthcare that improves both treatment outcomes and quality of life.
