Ayodhya to Feature Statues of Three Great South Indian Musicians as Vrihaspati

AYODHYA — In a move set to boost spiritual tourism and honor India’s rich musical heritage, the Yogi government is undertaking the restoration of historical ponds, or kunds, in Ayodhya. A major project is the beautification of the Vrihaspati Kund near Tedhi Bazar, which will feature a unique tribute to three legendary South Indian composers.

The renovation work, being carried out by the Uttar Pradesh State Construction Corporation at a cost of ₹4.49 crore, is nearing completion. The project is expected to be opened to the public in the next one to one and a half months. According to officials, the inclusion of statues of revered Carnatic musicians Thyagaraja Swamigal, Purandara Dasa, and Arunachala Kavi is specifically aimed at attracting tourists and devotees from South India. The foundations for these statues have already been laid, and the idols are expected to arrive on-site within 10 days.

This initiative follows the recent installation of a large veena statue dedicated to the late legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar at Naya Ghat roundabout, further cementing Ayodhya’s connection to music and the arts.

Restoring Ancient Glory

The Vrihaspati Kund is one of 108 ancient kunds in Ayodhya, with mentions in the Vedas and Puranas. It holds immense religious significance, as it is believed that Lord Rama and his brothers performed religious rites here during the Treta Yuga.

The ongoing restoration project is designed to revive the ancient glory of the kund while providing modern amenities for visitors. The work includes the construction of solid ghats (steps), a clean water system, a seating area, and landscaping. Essential infrastructure such as toilet blocks, a security cabin, a water treatment plant, and a rainwater harvesting system are in the final stages of completion.

Ravindra Yadav, the project manager for the State Construction Corporation, stated that the project is nearly finished and will significantly enhance religious tourism in the city. The success of similar restoration projects, such as the Surya Kund and Bharat Kund, which have already become major attractions, has set a precedent for the Vrihaspati Kund’s revitalization.
