Lucknow – In a bid to enhance transparency and accountability, the Uttar Pradesh police have introduced new guidelines for handling encounters. These include the mandatory videography of key moments during such incidents, as instructed by DGP Prashant Kumar.
According to the new directives, if a criminal is either killed or injured in an encounter, the entire sequence will be recorded on video. Additionally, the post-mortem of any deceased criminal will be carried out by a joint team of two doctors, and this procedure will also be videographed. Experts from the forensic science laboratory will examine the crime scene, ensuring a detailed investigation.
To ensure impartiality, the investigation of encounters will be handled by another police station or the crime branch. In the event of a death, the family of the deceased will be informed promptly.
Furthermore, all weapons used by the police personnel involved in the encounter will undergo ballistic testing, as will the weapons recovered from the criminal. The results of these tests will be meticulously recorded in the case diary, ensuring a thorough documentation of the events.
These guidelines reflect the UP police’s commitment to maintaining transparency during encounters and ensuring that all procedures are followed rigorously.
