Gonda: Kotwali Nagar police have arrested another alleged member of an organised interstate cyber fraud gang accused of cheating people across the country on the pretext of providing jobs.
Police arrested wanted accused Abhishek Chelani from his residence in Sonar Gali, Dadua Bazaar, McCarthy Ganj, in connection with a cyber fraud case involving fake employment offers. Following the arrest, he was produced before the court for further legal proceedings.
The action was taken in connection with Case No. 0288/2026 under Sections 318(4), 319(2), 336(3) and 338 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 66D of the Information Technology Act.
According to police, the gang was identified during an investigation of suspicious mobile numbers displayed on the Samanvay/Pratibimb portal. In February 2026, Chhattisgarh resident Lalit Jharia contacted a number listed in a health department job advertisement. The accused allegedly cheated him by demanding money for registration, interview, training and joining.
Investigation of his online complaint revealed three additional mobile numbers. Although the SIM cards were registered outside Gonda and even outside Uttar Pradesh, their locations during the alleged fraud were traced to Gonda. The numbers had been deactivated by the time of investigation.
Police said the gang had allegedly been running the job fraud operation for around 18 months, targeting victims in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka and Telangana.
More than 25 online cybercrime complaints in different states were reportedly linked to the mobile phones and bank accounts allegedly used with these numbers, police said.
