Sheikh Hasina quits as PM, moves out of Bangladesh as tempers rise

New Delhi / Dhaka: The situation in Bangladesh has deteriorated significantly following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country amidst violent protests. These protests, primarily led by students, have been ongoing since early July, with the death toll reaching approximately 300 people due to clashes with security forces.

On August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina stepped down and fled to the United Kingdom via India. She resigned amid mounting pressure from escalating demonstrations against her government’s controversial job quota policy, which protesters claimed was discriminatory. The Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced the formation of an interim government and pledged to restore order and ensure justice for those killed during the protests.

The unrest has significantly disrupted daily life and trade activities in Bangladesh, leading to an indefinite internet blackout and curfews imposed by the government. Indian authorities have responded by intensifying patrolling along the Indo-Bangladesh border to manage any potential spillover effects.
