Lucknow: To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Lucknow, organized an awareness programme aimed at educating senior citizens about their legal rights, welfare provisions, and available support mechanisms for protection against abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Kunwar Mitresh Singh Kushwaha in compliance with directives issued by the National Legal Services Authority and the Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority. The initiative was organized under the Jagriti (Legal Awareness, Grassroots Information and Transparency Initiative) Scheme-2025.
The awareness session was held at a shelter home operated by Umeed Sanstha under the National Urban Livelihood Mission. The programme focused on promoting the rights, dignity, welfare, and protection of senior citizens while highlighting the challenges they often face, including neglect, abuse, and social isolation.
During the event, participants were informed about various forms of elder abuse and the legal remedies available to them. Special emphasis was placed on the provisions of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which safeguards the rights of elderly individuals and provides mechanisms for their maintenance and welfare.
Officials also briefed attendees on the availability of free legal aid services and explained how senior citizens can seek assistance through the District Legal Services Authority in cases involving abuse, neglect, harassment, or violation of their rights. Information regarding various welfare schemes run by the Central and State Governments was also shared.
The programme was attended by caretaker Arun Shukla, advocate Parmanand, and Para Legal Volunteer Rajesh Kumar, who interacted with the senior citizens and addressed their concerns.

Speakers stressed the need to ensure respect, security, and a dignified life for elderly citizens. They called upon society to adopt a more compassionate and respectful attitude toward senior citizens and recognize their invaluable contribution to families and communities.
Addressing the gathering, Para Legal Volunteer Rajesh Kumar said that senior citizens are a priceless asset to society and that protecting their rights, dignity, and well-being is a collective responsibility.
“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day aims to prevent abuse and neglect of senior citizens while creating widespread awareness about their rights and dignity. Every member of society must play a role in ensuring that elderly people live with respect, care, and security,” he said.
The event concluded with an appeal to senior citizens to seek legal assistance whenever they face any form of exploitation, neglect, or rights violations. Organizers reiterated that free legal support remains available through the District Legal Services Authority to help elderly citizens access justice and protect their rights.
