New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s air defence capabilities, Russia has dispatched the fourth regiment of the S-400 Triumf air defence system, with delivery expected in early May and deployment planned for later in the month.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the advanced missile system will be stationed in Rajasthan, reinforcing India’s aerial defence posture along the strategically sensitive western front.
The induction marks another key milestone in India’s ongoing acquisition of the S-400 systems, widely regarded as among the most sophisticated long-range surface-to-air missile platforms globally. Designed to detect, track, and neutralise a wide range of aerial threats—including fighter aircraft, drones, and ballistic missiles—the system significantly enhances India’s defensive shield.
Rajasthan has been identified as a critical deployment zone due to its proximity to potential cross-border threats. Positioning the fourth regiment in this sector is expected to strengthen deterrence capabilities while ensuring robust protection of both military assets and civilian infrastructure.
The S-400’s integration into India’s broader air defence network complements indigenous systems and other imported platforms, forming a multi-layered defence architecture capable of responding to diverse aerial challenges.

The delivery also signals the nearing completion of the India-Russia S-400 deal. The fifth and final regiment is slated for delivery by November 2026, which will complete the full induction of five regiments under the agreement.
Once operational across all designated sectors—including Punjab and the eastern theatre—the S-400 systems will provide comprehensive coverage, significantly bolstering India’s strategic defence preparedness.
The phased deployment underscores India’s continued focus on military modernisation amid evolving regional security dynamics, while also highlighting the enduring strength of defence ties between New Delhi and Moscow.
