Neeru Sharma’s ‘Bandra Boy’ Earns International Recognition in New York
Mumbai (Anil Bedag): After spending years bringing stories from the entertainment industry to audiences through her journalism, Neeru Sharma is now inspiring viewers with her own storytelling. Her debut directorial Hindi thriller, Bandra Boy, has made a remarkable mark at two prestigious international film festivals in New York, proving that a compelling story and a clear creative vision can transcend borders.
The 21-minute film has been selected as a Semi-Finalist at the Frames of New York Film Festival and has won an Award at the New York International Women Festival. Such recognition is a significant achievement for any first-time filmmaker, making Neeru Sharma’s accomplishment all the more remarkable as it comes with her very first directorial venture.
Bandra Boy is more than just a thriller. It explores the delicate intersection of media, public perception, and truth, raising thought-provoking questions about how society often forms judgments before the complete truth comes to light. The film examines whether people are declared guilty or innocent based on public opinion long before reality is fully understood.
Having spent over two decades in Bollywood and entertainment journalism, Neeru Sharma witnessed countless real-life incidents, controversies, and human stories firsthand. These experiences became the foundation of Bandra Boy. Her transition from journalism to filmmaking reflects how years of observation and experience can evolve into impactful cinema.
Speaking about the film’s international recognition, Neeru Sharma said, “Receiving international recognition for my first film as a director is incredibly encouraging. ‘Bandra Boy’ was born from the experiences and questions I encountered while closely observing the media and entertainment industry over the years. This honor inspires me to continue telling meaningful and thought-provoking stories.”
Before stepping into filmmaking, Neeru Sharma received formal training in direction at Whistling Woods International, the renowned film institute founded by filmmaker Subhash Ghai. Her journey from journalist to filmmaker is now being seen as an inspiring example within the industry.
The film stars Ahwaan Kumar in the lead role, with acclaimed Gujarati and Marathi actor Dharmendra Gohil playing a pivotal character. The cast also includes Lochan Barsagade, Yash Pednekar, Shyam Thombre, Pawan Tiwari, Aishwarya Manohar, Himanshi Mandalia, and Nandini Sharma.
Produced by Rajeev Parashar, the film has been edited by Sandeep Kurup, known for his work on Mubarakan, Sadak 2, and Crakk. The cinematography is by Ayush Shah, while the background score has been composed by Kaushal Mahavir. The recognition received at two prestigious New York film festivals is not only a milestone for Bandra Boy but also a reflection of the evolving vision of Indian independent cinema—one that confidently connects local narratives with universal emotions. Neeru Sharma’s successful debut signals the arrival of a filmmaker whose stories are now finding a place on the global stage after years of reporting on the stories of others.
