Lucknow: The Lucknow Cyber Crime Police have arrested a man for allegedly cheating students and their parents of around Rs 46 lakh by promising admission to BITS Pilani, officials said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Yashraj Bajpai, allegedly ran a fake education consultancy and approached students and parents with assurances of securing admission. Police said he collected money under various pretexts, including admission fees, registration charges and payments for arranging seats.
To convince victims, Bajpai allegedly issued fabricated admission letters and fee receipts, police said. The fraud came to light after complaints were received by the Cyber Crime Police, following which an investigation was launched.
Police said the accused was apprehended at Lucknow airport while allegedly attempting to leave the country. During the arrest, officers reportedly recovered Rs 40,225 in cash, a laptop, three mobile phones and five ATM cards from his possession.
Investigators are now examining the financial transactions and digital evidence linked to the case. Police are also working to identify any other individuals who may have assisted the accused and determine whether additional students or families were targeted through the alleged scheme.
Officials said the investigation is continuing, with further details expected as the probe progresses.
