Scholarships being provided to students from high school–intermediate to MBBS, B.Tech, and MBA programs

Lucknow: The Yogi government is continuously taking concrete steps to promote education and empower students from economically weaker sections. In this direction, during the year 2025-26, more than 36 lakh students from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category have been provided financial assistance under the pre-matric and post-matric scholarship schemes.

Notably, along with male and female students, the transgender community has also been included in the scheme, presenting an example of inclusive development. The objective of this scheme is to support children from economically weaker families in pursuing education, and students whose parents have an annual income of ₹2 lakh or less are eligible for its benefits.

In 2025-26, a total of 3,675,294 OBC students received scholarships, reflecting that government policies are reaching every section of society.

Under the pre-matric (Classes 9-10) scholarship scheme, a total of ₹219.64 crore has been transferred directly to the bank accounts of 8,88,863 students, including 4,58,585 girls, 4,30,275 boys, and 3 transgender students. Under this scheme, students receive ₹150 per month for up to 10 months along with an annual grant of ₹750, totaling up to ₹2,250 directly credited to their bank accounts.

Meanwhile, the post-matric scholarship scheme provides a major boost to higher education by covering studies from intermediate (Classes 11-12) to higher and professional courses. It includes professional courses such as B.Tech, MBBS, and MBA, as well as BA, BSc, BCom, ITI, and Polytechnic courses, thereby making higher education more accessible for students from poor and middle-class families.

Under the post-matric scheme, a total of 2,786,431 students from Classes 11-12 and higher education have received financial assistance amounting to ₹2,882.02 crore. This includes 4,72,764 girls, 3,80,667 boys, and 2 transgender students in Classes 11-12, while in higher education, 10,01,084 girls, 9,31,906 boys, and 8 transgender students have benefited, indicating the wide-reaching impact of the scheme.

The scholarship amounts are determined based on course groups, with Group 1 (B.Tech, MBA, MBBS) offering ₹56,600 annually for day scholars and ₹64,400 for hostellers, Group 2 (MSc, MA, BBA, PG Diploma) providing ₹36,360 and ₹39,840 respectively, and Group 3 (BA, BSc, BCom) granting ₹23,600 for day scholars and ₹26,840 for hostellers.

Under Group 4, which includes Intermediate, ITI, and Polytechnic courses, assistance varies, with ITI and Polytechnic students receiving ₹12,760 for day scholars and ₹14,560 for hostellers annually, while Class 11 students receive ₹3,225 (day scholars) and ₹5,025 (hostellers), and Class 12 students receive ₹3,290 (day scholars) and ₹5,090 (hostellers).

The Yogi government has ensured a fully transparent scholarship distribution system, requiring students to apply online through the scholarship management system, with funds directly transferred to their bank accounts. For post-matric scholarships, higher education students must secure at least 50 percent marks to be eligible, while all OBC students from Classes 9 to 12 qualify for the scheme.

Director of the Backward Class Welfare Department, IAS officer Umesh Pratap Singh, stated that these schemes are building a strong foundation for OBC students in education and reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring that no eligible student from an economically weaker background is deprived of education.

He emphasized that the process has been made transparent and urged students to apply within the stipulated time to fully benefit from the scheme
