New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the farmers of Golamunda block in Kalahandi district, Odisha, for their significant role in initiating a “vegetable revolution.” In his monthly Mann Ki Baat program, Modi highlighted the efforts of the farmers in transforming the region, which was once known for its poverty and migration issues, into a thriving hub for vegetable cultivation.
The transformation began with a small group of ten farmers who formed a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) and began adopting modern farming technologies. Today, over 200 farmers, including 45 women, are part of the “Kisan Utpad Sangh” FPO, which has been instrumental in the region’s agricultural success.
Modi emphasized that the Golamunda block now cultivates vegetables like bitter gourd on 150 acres and tomatoes on 200 acres. As a result of these collective efforts, the FPO’s annual revenue has soared to over ₹1.5 crore. Furthermore, Kalahandi’s vegetables are now being sold in other districts of Odisha and across state borders, demonstrating the growth of the local agricultural economy.
The Prime Minister shared that the success story of Golamunda is a testament to what can be achieved through perseverance and teamwork. He urged citizens to support and strengthen FPOs in their own regions, noting that even small beginnings can lead to monumental changes. “All we need is perseverance and camaraderie,” he said.
One of the key figures in this transformation, Krushna Nag, was previously a truck driver. Today, he manages vegetable farming on 15 acres of land, providing for his family without the need to travel for work. Nag expressed his gratitude for the recognition from the Prime Minister, stating, “The Prime Minister’s recognition of our efforts makes me very happy.”
Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, also celebrated Golamunda’s evolution into a “Vegetable Hub.” He highlighted that more than 200 farmers, including 45 women, are benefiting from Farmer Producer Organizations and modern agricultural techniques.
Arabinda Padhee, Secretary of Odisha’s Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment department, expressed his pride in the FPO’s success, saying, “Happy to see our Agriculture Production Center (APC) initiative featured in Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Mann Ki Baat today!” He further praised the community’s transformation, having witnessed it firsthand.
Sujeet Kumar, a member of the BJP Rajya Sabha and a native of Kalahandi, also commended the Prime Minister for bringing attention to the region’s agricultural revolution, calling it an inspiring tale of perseverance.
The recognition from Prime Minister Modi has brought greater attention to Golamunda’s remarkable shift from hardship to prosperity, with the potential for continued growth through collaborative farming efforts and modern agricultural practices.
