Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh – Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath underscored the need for a compassionate approach toward nature, animals, and the environment during a special event at the Shaheed Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park on Monday. Inaugurating an Elephant Rescue Center, along with a Butterfly Park, the Chief Minister emphasized harmonious coexistence with nature, stating that even animals respond positively to affection and humane treatment.
Inaugurations and Highlights
- Elephant Rescue Center and Butterfly Park: The Chief Minister inaugurated these key additions to the zoo.
- Coffee Table Book Release: A coffee table book documenting the park’s journey and efforts was unveiled.
- Tree Plantation: CM Adityanath planted saplings to further the cause of afforestation.
- Animal Feeding: He fed sugarcane, bananas, and other treats to elephants and rhinos, demonstrating care for wildlife.
- Art Presentation: Students from the National Police Academy presented portraits of the Chief Minister as a token of appreciation.
Uttar Pradesh’s Green Initiatives
CM Adityanath highlighted the state’s achievements in environmental conservation:
- Massive Afforestation: Over 100 crore saplings have been planted in the past 7-8 years, significantly increasing the state’s forest cover.
- New Conservation Projects: The establishment of a Jatayu Conservation Center in Campierganj is underway. The state is also exploring the creation of a Horticulture and Forestry University to advance research and education in environmental science.
Environmental Awareness and Future Actions
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of raising environmental awareness among the youth and avoiding harmful practices that threaten ecological balance. Key appeals included:
- Avoid Single-Use Plastics: CM urged citizens to eliminate plastic waste to protect the environment.
- Tree Plantation Goals: Every individual should plant at least ten trees annually.
- Water Conservation: Promoting rainwater harvesting to preserve water resources and prevent wastage.
Gorakhpur Zoo’s Achievements
Since its inauguration on March 27, 2021, the Gorakhpur Zoo has attracted over 30 lakh visitors, including 10 lakh students. The zoo has become a hub for environmental education and recreation.

Unique Initiatives
- Animal Naming Ceremony:
- A pair of wolves rescued from Bahraich was named Bhairav (male) and Bhairavi (female).
- A tiger brought from the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve in September 2024 was named Kesari and was introduced into its enclosure during the event.
- Community Contributions: Local MLA Bipin Singh donated an elephant, Ganga Prasad, to the rescue center, setting a precedent for community involvement in wildlife conservation.
