Efforts continue to ensure fairplay in elections

Lucknow: State Chief Electoral Officer,  Navdeep Rinwa informed that the Commission’s instructions regarding seizure of illegal liquor, cash etc. are being strictly followed by enforcement agencies and flying squads in Uttar Pradesh. With the announcement of election dates for the Lok Sabha General Elections-2024 by the Election Commission of India on March 16, 2024, the Model Code of Conduct is in force in the entire state to conduct free, fair, peaceful, fear-free, temptation-free, inclusive and safe voting in the state.

The Chief Electoral Officer informed that liquor, drugs, precious metals and cash etc. worth a total of Rs 42918.38 lakh were seized by the Excise, Income Tax, Police and Narcotics Department and other enforcement agencies from March 01 to May 19, 2024. In this, cash amount of Rs 3431.82 lakh, liquor worth Rs 5434.31 lakh, drugs worth Rs 23543.30 lakh, precious metals worth Rs 2294.24 lakh, free gifts worth Rs 5405.26 lakh and other materials worth Rs 2809.45 lakh were seized.

A total of liquor, drugs and cash worth Rs 88.82 lakh were seized by the Excise, Income Tax, Police and Narcotics Department and other enforcement agencies on May 19, 2024. In this, cash amount of Rs 1.76 lakh, 12785.46 liters of liquor worth Rs 33.27 lakh, 29064 grams of drug worth Rs 38.72 lakh, 17361 free gifts worth Rs 14.62 lakh and 40 other materials worth Rs 0.45 lakh were seized.

In the major seizures on May 19, 2024, 39 grams of drugs worth an estimated Rs 15 lakh were seized in Basti Sadar Assembly Constituency of Basti district and 80 grams of drugs worth an estimated Rs 16 lakh were seized in Madihan Assembly Constituency of Mirzapur district.
