Thimphu, Bhutan – On December 31, 2024, Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay visited the Indian Embassy in Thimphu to sign the book of condolences in remembrance of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92.
Expressing his gratitude for Singh’s “unwavering support and personal friendship,” Tobgay acknowledged the late leader’s significant role in the development of Bhutan, particularly his contribution to the introduction of the country’s 11th Five Year Plan.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Tobgay shared a photo of himself signing the condolence book, noting, “We were able to quickly and effectively introduce the 11th Five Year Plan because of his assistance and collaboration.” He continued, “He will always be regarded as a genuine friend of Bhutan who was instrumental in fortifying the country’s relations with India.”
Tobgay extended heartfelt condolences to Singh’s family, including his wife, and offered prayers in his memory. “We send our warmest condolences to Dr. Manmohan Singh’s wife and family, as well as our sincere prayers for him,” he wrote.
Singh’s passing on December 26 marked the end of a long and illustrious political career. He was cremated with state honors on December 28 at Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi. Several prominent Indian leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and others, paid their respects at the cremation ceremony.
A key figure in India’s economic transformation, Singh served as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, where he introduced landmark economic reforms. He later served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, overseeing significant growth and facing global and domestic challenges.
