Lucknow: In a symbolic move to promote energy conservation and environmental awareness, Vice Chancellor of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Prof. J.P. Pandey, walked to his office on Friday morning instead of using an official vehicle.
The initiative comes as part of the university’s implementation of a five-day working week system, introduced in line with the energy conservation appeals made by the Prime Minister and Chief Minister. Under this new arrangement, every Friday has also been declared a “no-vehicle zone” within the university campus.
Prof. Pandey reached his office on foot and later directed officials to strictly enforce the no-vehicle zone policy across the campus. The university officially opened at 9:30 am under the revised schedule.
As part of the initiative, faculty members, officers, and staff members were encouraged to adopt eco-friendly commuting practices. Many employees used bicycles and public transport, while several others opted to walk to the campus.

The Vice Chancellor said that responsible use of transport and energy is essential in the present global scenario. He stressed that adapting to sustainable practices is no longer optional but a necessity in today’s changing world.
He further stated that such small but meaningful steps contribute to reducing energy consumption and protecting the environment, while also setting an example for students and society at large.
The university administration said the initiative aims to build awareness about sustainable living and encourage greener habits among the academic community.
