AI-Powered Monitoring to Enhance Security Measures in Puri

BHUBANESWAR: In a major step toward boosting the security infrastructure of Puri, Odisha police have announced plans to deploy artificial intelligence (AI)-based CCTV systems across the town and along National Highway-316. The initiative is designed to strengthen vigilance against anti-social elements, manage crowd control, and reduce traffic congestion in one of the state’s most visited tourist destinations.

A Strategic Surveillance Upgrade

The new AI-powered surveillance system will include high-tech CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition and license plate reading capabilities. A survey is currently underway to identify the most strategic locations for the installation of these cameras. The deployment will target key areas in Puri and along the busy highways, ensuring a comprehensive network for enhanced monitoring.

Puri, known for its religious significance and as the site of the famous Shree Jagannath Temple, attracts millions of visitors throughout the year. However, the town faces significant challenges in managing the influx, particularly during the Rath Yatra festival and the New Year festivities when the crowds can swell to over a million people.

Recovery from 2019 Storm and Need for Enhanced Security

The need for a robust security system became even more evident after the devastating impact of Cyclone Fani in 2019, which destroyed most of the town’s existing CCTV infrastructure. In the wake of this destruction, local authorities have been working to rebuild and improve security measures to handle the growing number of tourists and maintain public safety.

Currently, around 135 cameras are in operation around the Shree Jagannath Temple, with the Singhadawar police station serving as the central control hub. The town’s security measures during peak times, like the Rath Yatra and winter holidays, are augmented with a significant workforce. Police personnel are tasked with crowd management, surveillance of miscreants, and ensuring the safety of both domestic and international visitors.

AI-Driven Surveillance to Revolutionize Security

The introduction of AI-based monitoring will transform how Puri’s security is managed, offering real-time surveillance and the ability to quickly detect any suspicious activity. Senior police officials have highlighted the need for at least 500 new cameras to effectively monitor Puri and its surroundings, including vital entry and exit points like Atharnala, Mangalaghat, and Balighata.

In addition to these locations, AI-powered cameras will be installed in high-traffic areas such as the Gundicha Temple, the town’s seashore, and other popular tourist spots. These advanced systems will be integrated into a centralized command and control center, which will operate 24/7, providing constant monitoring and quicker response times to any security breaches.

Statewide CCTV Network Expansion

The push to improve security in Puri is part of a broader initiative by the Odisha police to enhance CCTV surveillance across the entire state. Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania emphasized the importance of technology in both crime detection and prevention. He noted, “Technology is crucial for both detecting and preventing crimes. In the coming months, we aim to establish a comprehensive CCTV network across Odisha.”

With this initiative, Puri’s security will not only improve, but it will also serve as a model for other districts in Odisha to follow. By embracing AI technology, the state is taking a significant step toward ensuring the safety of its citizens and visitors while maintaining order during high-traffic events.

This AI-powered surveillance system is set to enhance Puri’s security framework, offering residents and tourists alike greater peace of mind. As the town continues to grow in popularity, these measures will ensure that safety and order remain a top priority for authorities.
