Solar Defence Delivers 450 Nagastra-1R Loitering Munitions to Indian Army

New Delhi: Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL) has completed the delivery of 450 Nagastra-1R loitering munitions to the Indian Army, marking a significant milestone in the company’s indigenous defence manufacturing programme.

According to the company, the delivery fulfils an order placed by the Army in June 2025 under its emergency procurement mechanism. The procurement followed technical evaluations designed to assess the system’s compliance with the Army’s operational requirements.

SDAL stated that four companies participated in the evaluation process, but its system was the only one to meet all the specified technical parameters. The Nagastra-1R subsequently underwent multiple live trials, including assessments of target accuracy and operational performance.

The system is designed for short-range precision-strike missions. Its loitering capability allows it to remain airborne before engaging an authorised target. It also reportedly offers a mission-abort and recovery option under specified conditions, providing operational flexibility when an engagement needs to be discontinued.

The delivery reflects India’s continuing efforts to strengthen domestic defence production and equip its armed forces with locally developed technologies. Indigenous manufacturing can also help build domestic expertise and reduce dependence on imported military equipment.

Focus on Indigenous Counter-Drone Technology

SDAL is also developing capabilities in the counter-drone segment through its Bhargavastra system. In July 2026, company chairman Satyanarayan Nuwal highlighted the system’s potential contribution to India’s air-defence capabilities.

Nuwal said the system’s radar could detect aerial threats at distances of up to 10 kilometres, while its Electro-Optical Tracking System had a reported range of six kilometres. These figures were cited by the company chairman and have not been independently verified here.

The company has also linked its technology development efforts to India’s broader ambition to strengthen integrated air defence by 2030.

The delivery of 450 Nagastra-1R systems underscores the growing role of Indian manufacturers in supplying specialised military equipment. Their long-term contribution will depend on performance in operational service, reliability and the ability to meet the evolving requirements of the armed forces.
