Lucknow: Aam Aadmi Party’s Uttar Pradesh in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has accused the Election Commission of adopting an allegedly arbitrary system for adding and deleting voters and demanded stringent action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In a statement issued on social media, Singh claimed that two Election Commissioners had recorded their disagreement 14 times over changes to Form 6 and the centralised system for modifying electoral rolls. He alleged that despite these objections, unilateral decisions were being taken by the Chief Election Commissioner.
Singh questioned the rationale behind transferring powers from local election officials to a centralised mechanism. He alleged that large numbers of names could be removed from electoral rolls under the new system, potentially affecting election outcomes.
Referring to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Singh alleged that names of several prominent former office-holders and public figures had been removed from voter lists. He also claimed that millions of names were deleted or kept pending in West Bengal before a subsequent affidavit reportedly found a large majority of the names to be valid.
Singh demanded that Kumar be arrested and that elections held in Bihar, West Bengal, Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra be cancelled and conducted afresh with what he described as fair electoral rolls.
On law and order in Delhi, Singh criticised the Centre over the alleged gang-rape case in Kalkaji and demanded an explanation from the Union Home Ministry. He alleged that the national capital had witnessed a deterioration in public safety and said the AAP would continue to raise issues concerning electoral processes and governance both in Parliament and outside it.
He also criticised the Bihar government over an alleged incident involving a minor girl in Jamui and demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, citing his earlier public statement on taking responsibility in cases of molestation.
