Lucknow: World Lung Day was observed at Vivekananda Polyclinic and Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow on Friday to raise awareness about the importance of lung health and respiratory diseases.
Renowned chest and lung specialist Dr Bhavtosh Biswas said healthy lungs are essential for breathing, supplying oxygen to the body and maintaining overall well-being. He noted that respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung cancer and respiratory infections affect millions of people worldwide.

According to Dr Biswas, exposure to air pollution, tobacco smoke, harmful chemicals, dust and infections can increase the risk of lung-related illnesses.
Vivekananda Polyclinic Secretary Swami Muktinathan said World Lung Day provides an opportunity to educate people about prevention and early detection of respiratory diseases. He advised people to avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, minimise exposure to polluted air, use protective equipment while working around dust or chemicals, maintain good hygiene, remain physically active and follow recommended vaccinations.

Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr B.K. Singh urged people not to ignore persistent cough, breathing difficulty, wheezing, chest discomfort or coughing up blood. He stressed that timely medical consultation can help in the early diagnosis and treatment of several lung conditions.
The speakers called for greater public awareness, tobacco avoidance, cleaner air, regular physical activity and timely medical care to protect lung health.
