UP Police Launch Special Training Programme to Help Officers Handle High-Pressure Situations

Lucknow | In an effort to improve police response under pressure and enhance public interaction, the Uttar Pradesh Police has launched a specialised training programme for selected officers. The three-day capacity-building initiative, titled ‘Saksham Policing’, is being conducted as a pilot project at the police headquarters by the Directorate of Police Training in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).

A batch of 40 carefully selected police personnel is undergoing the training, which focuses on behavioural skills, stress management and effective communication. Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna inaugurated the programme and underlined the importance of continuous learning for both institutional credibility and individual effectiveness.

Focus on Attitude and Behaviour

Speaking at the launch, the DGP said that beyond technical expertise, an officer’s attitude and conduct play a decisive role in performance on the ground. He stressed that verbal and non-verbal communication skills are particularly critical, as the manner in which police officers engage with citizens directly shapes public perception of the force.

Highlighting the selective nature of the programme, Krishna noted that only 40 officers were chosen from a force of nearly four lakh personnel. He urged participants to view the opportunity as a privilege and to engage with the training sincerely, with openness and a positive mindset. He added that quality and continuity of training are key factors behind the success of leading institutions and security forces worldwide.

Emphasis on Emotional Resilience

TISS Vice-Chancellor Professor Badri Narayan Tiwari said policing requires emotional resilience and social sensitivity. “Police personnel operate under constant pressure and public scrutiny. This programme has been designed to help them develop balance, empathy and effectiveness through structured behavioural training,” he said.

Director General of Police Training Rajeev Sabharwal stated that the initiative aims to align officers with the evolving demands of modern policing. He said the programme focuses on behaviour, communication styles and professional competence in line with contemporary challenges.

Senior police officials expressed confidence that the initiative would lead to improved conduct at the grassroots level, strengthen public trust and enhance the overall capability of the police force.
