Fort Lauderdale — Inter Miami lifted their maiden MLS Cup after a 3–1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at Chase Stadium, with Lionel Messi’s brilliance once again proving decisive. The Argentine icon delivered two classy assists, setting up late goals for Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende, sealing the club’s historic title.
Vancouver, driven forward by Thomas Mueller’s tireless play, dominated large spells and carved out several promising chances. But the contest ultimately hinged on Messi’s influence, as the 38-year-old crowned what has been his most complete season in American football with the MVP award and his first MLS league championship.
“This was one of our biggest objectives,” Messi said after the match.
“We topped the table last year but fell in the first round. This time the MLS Cup was the ultimate prize, and the team rose to the challenge.”
Miami Strike Early, Vancouver Respond
Miami took an early lead in the eighth minute when Messi threaded a precise pass to Allende, whose low cross deflected off defender Edier Ocampo and into the Vancouver net for an own goal.
Despite the setback, Vancouver controlled the tempo after halftime. Their pressure paid off in the 60th minute, when Ali Ahmed drove into the box and fired a shot that slipped under goalkeeper Ríos Novo, levelling the match and injecting renewed energy into the visitors.
Messi Takes Charge
The balance shifted again in the 71st minute. After pouncing on a loose touch from Vancouver, Messi slid a perfectly weighted ball across the area for Rodrigo De Paul, who calmly swept home the finish to restore Miami’s lead.
Deep into stoppage time, Messi unlocked the defence once more, feeding Allende for Miami’s third and final goal—sparking emotional scenes on the touchline. Jordi Alba was visibly in tears as he and Sergio Busquets closed out what is expected to be their final professional match, ending decades-long careers alongside their former Barcelona teammate.

“I’m happy for them,” Messi said.
“They’ve given everything to this sport. They’re dear friends, and finishing like this is incredibly special.”
Beckham Savours Miami’s Moment
Club co-owner David Beckham joined the celebrations, praising the team’s resilience throughout a demanding campaign.
“Credit to Vancouver—they pushed us hard,” Beckham said.
“But when you put the ball at Leo’s feet, he creates magic. This group has stayed united all season.”
Reflecting on Miami’s long road to championship success, Beckham added:
“It hasn’t been simple. There were plenty of sleepless nights. But we promised our fans world-class players and trophies. Tonight we delivered. Next year we go again—after we enjoy this moment.”
Inter Miami’s breakthrough MLS Cup crowns a season defined by Messi’s artistry, veteran leadership, and a team that learned to thrive under pressure—ushering in a new era for the club.
