New Portable Compactor Transfer Station Installed in Bans Mandi

Lucknow: The newly constructed portable compactor transfer station at Bans Mandi in the Lal Kuan ward was inaugurated  by Mayor Sushma Kharkwal. The addition of this facility is expected to significantly strengthen the sanitation system in the area and enhance the city’s solid waste management infrastructure.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Sushma Kharkwal said, “The Municipal Corporation is committed to transforming Lucknow into a clean, green and modern city. This new portable compactor transfer station is another important step in that direction, which will considerably improve the efficiency of waste management and sanitation services.”

The project is being operated under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by Lucknow Swachhata Abhiyan Pvt. Ltd. The Lucknow Municipal Corporation has entrusted the company with solid waste management services across Zones 01, 03, 04, 06 and 07 of the city.

Under this contract, the responsibilities include door-to-door waste collection, secondary waste collection and transportation, street and lane sweeping, drain cleaning and silt removal, along with the construction and operation of portable and fixed compactor transfer stations. Out of the proposed 32 compactor transfer stations, 11 have already been constructed and made operational.

As part of the same series of initiatives, the new Bans Mandi station in Zone 1 has been readied for inauguration. Two portable compactors have been installed at the site — one designated for wet waste and the other for dry waste. Each compactor has a capacity of 20 cubic metres and can manage around 15–16 metric tonnes of waste.

To aid waste transportation, a hook loader vehicle has also been deployed. The primary goal behind constructing this transfer station is to eliminate the practice of dumping waste in open areas and curb the scattering of garbage in public spaces. The facility will also help prevent animals from rummaging through waste for food.

Additionally, the system ensures segregated collection and transportation of wet and dry waste, thereby supporting environmentally friendly solid waste management practices. Officials said the mechanism would not only strengthen compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules but also ensure a cleaner and greener environment for surrounding areas round the clock.
