Pope Leo XIV Urges Restraint Amid Escalating Israel-Iran Conflict: “Choose Wisdom Over War”

Vatican City/Tehran: Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep concern over the escalating military conflict between Israel and Iran, calling for both nations to exercise restraint and return to the path of wisdom and dialogue. In what is being seen as his strongest call for peace yet during his five-week papacy, the Pope addressed the crisis during a Jubilee ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica.

“In these fragile times, I appeal for responsibility and discernment,” said the Pope, urging world leaders to work toward a future free of the threat of nuclear weapons. “Lasting peace can only be built on the foundations of justice, fraternity, and the common good. No nation should ever endanger the existence of another.”

Pope Leo’s call for peace came just hours after Israel launched fresh airstrikes on several strategic military sites in western Iran, reportedly killing two people at a missile installation. In retaliation, Iran fired a series of missiles toward Israel, one of which struck the city of Rishon LeZion, killing 73-year-old resident Yisrael Aloni.

Adding to the rising tensions, Iranian authorities in Yazd Province arrested five individuals accused of spying for Israel.

Calling on all nations to take responsibility, Pope Leo said, “We must seek reconciliation, initiate peace efforts, and ensure the safety and dignity of every individual.” His message comes at a time when the Middle East teeters on the brink of a broader war, and is being hailed globally as a powerful moral intervention in favor of peace.
