Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost Elected First American to Lead the Roman Catholic Church

New Delhi: In a historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th Pope, becoming the first American ever to hold the papacy. Taking the name Pope Leo XIV, the 69-year-old cleric from Chicago emerged on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica late on May 8 and greeted the world with a heartfelt message: “Peace be with all of you!”

The announcement was made in the traditional fashion by French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, who proclaimed the Latin phrase “Habemus Papam” (We have a Pope) before a cheering crowd of tens of thousands gathered at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.

A Message of Peace and Unity

Pope Leo XIV addressed the crowd with warmth and humility, saying he hoped his message of peace would “enter your hearts, reach your families and all people, wherever they are.” He delivered his initial address in English, and later spoke in Italian, Spanish, and Latin, showcasing his multilingual ability and global outreach.

Humble Roots, Global Calling

Born and raised in Chicago, Prevost has spent much of his religious life serving as a missionary in Peru, where he gained admiration for his pastoral dedication and grassroots engagement. Prior to his election, he was elevated to Cardinal in 2023 and had quickly earned a reputation for his quiet leadership and a vision to modernise and make the Church more inclusive in a rapidly changing world.

Leo XIV is known for his intellectual depth, spiritual humility, and reluctance to be in the media spotlight, having granted very few interviews throughout his ecclesiastical career. He previously served for 12 years in various leadership roles within the Church and is recognised for pushing reform in both doctrine and outreach.

Reactions from Around the World

The election of the first American Pope sent waves of excitement through the United States, with prominent figures sharing their reactions.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Pope Leo XIV via social media, stating:

“It is such an honour to realise that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great honour for our Country.”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson added a lighter note, proudly embracing the pontiff’s local roots:

“Everything dope, including the Pope, comes from Chicago!”

What Lies Ahead for the Church?

As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, many observers expect him to emphasise social justice, interfaith dialogue, and structural reform within the Church. His election comes at a time of global unrest, moral questioning, and a need for spiritual unity—challenges he acknowledged in his brief but poignant appearance on the Vatican balcony.

With his historic election, the Catholic Church enters a new era, one shaped by an American-born leader rooted in missionary values, global compassion, and a vision for peace.
