CJI Chandrachud Lifts LLB Requirement for Supreme Court Journalists

New Delhi: In a landmark decision, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has removed the LLB degree requirement for journalists covering Supreme Court proceedings, a change he introduced shortly before his retirement. Previously, reporters seeking accreditation to cover the Supreme Court were required to hold a law degree. However, CJI Chandrachud questioned the necessity of this condition, emphasizing that it is unclear why such a prerequisite was in place for media personnel.

According to a report by Bar and Bench, CJI Chandrachud stated, “We are doing two things. I have signed a file to increase the number of accredited reporters for the Supreme Court. I did not know for what reason there was a condition that you must have an LLB degree.” This move allows broader access to legal reporting, making it easier for journalists without formal legal education to bring Supreme Court news to the public.
