Canadian PM Justin Trudeau changes track on India

Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has once again given a statement on the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, this time his tone seems to have changed. Responding to a question, Trudeau said he looked forward to constructive cooperation with the Indian government in the investigation of Nijjar’s murder. The Trudeau government has been continuously accused of making unreasonable allegations against India instead of completing its investigation in the Nijjar murder case. This time Trudeau said that the murder of a citizen of his own country on Canadian soil is a matter which should be taken seriously.

According to the Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) in Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was asked what kind of cooperation is being received from India in the investigation of the murder of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Whereas he himself has accused India of involvement in the matter. Trudeau responded by saying, “The murder of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an incident that we should all take extremely seriously.”

The Canadian PM further said that his allegations that agents of the Indian government were involved are allegations that we do not make lightly. We have a responsibility to protect Canadian citizens from such conspiracies, which we need to take very seriously.” Reportedly India has already termed such allegations as baseless.

At the same time, in a video shared by CPAC, Trudeau said that the Canadian government is ensuring proper investigation. “That’s why we are acting in accordance with the law and our justice system and police are doing their jobs independently,” the Canadian PM said. Furthermore, he said that he wants to work constructively with the Indian government to get to the bottom of this matter.

It is noteworthy that Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was declared a terrorist by the NIA in 2020, was shot dead outside a Gurudwara in Surrey, British Columbia on the evening of June 18, 2023. Trudeau had alleged the Indian government’s role in Nijjar’s murder, which was rejected by India and led to a deterioration in diplomatic relations between the two countries. India had rejected the allegations as “absurd”. According to the Foreign Ministry, Canada could not present any evidence to prove its claim on this murder.
