Srinagar: In a significant statement, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi revealed that Pakistani nationals were responsible for 60% of the terrorists killed in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). He also stated that 80% of the active terrorists operating in the region are from Pakistan. Despite the sensitive security situation, General Dwivedi emphasized that the overall situation remains “stable” in the region.
Speaking during a news conference, General Dwivedi stated, “I’ll first dwell upon security issues and to begin with the Northern borders, as you are aware, the situation is sensitive but stable.” He further highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by terrorism, noting the rising attempts to fuel terrorism, especially in a time when the state of Jammu and Kashmir is attempting to shift towards peace and tourism.
“Pakistani nationals account for 60% of the terrorists slain in Jammu and Kashmir. At a time when we are shifting away from terrorism and toward tourism, 80% of the terrorists operating in the state are also Pakistanis,” General Dwivedi said, underscoring the ongoing threat from across the border.
Focus on Northern Borders and Ladakh
General Dwivedi also discussed the current situation along India’s northern borders, particularly in eastern Ladakh, specifically the regions of Depsang and Demchok. According to the Army Chief, the situation in these areas was resolved in October, and both regions are now being patrolled traditionally. Grazing activities have also resumed in these areas.
“We have successfully addressed the situation in Eastern Ladakh’s Depsang and Demchok. Traditional territories are now being patrolled, and grazing has resumed in these regions. To address minor concerns at the military level, I have given my co-commanders permission to manage these matters on the ground,” General Dwivedi explained.
He added that the deployment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) remains substantial and balanced, and the Army is fully prepared to handle any potential situation that may arise. The integration of advanced technology into the warfighting system has been emphasized to ensure that the Indian Army remains future-ready to meet security challenges, especially along the northern borders.
National Security and Media Collaboration
General Dwivedi also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the security forces and mass media to bolster national security and contribute to nation-building. “I firmly believe that there is a lot of room for mass media and security services to work together to promote national security and nation-building,” he said.
He emphasized that his mission is to ensure full-spectrum preparedness, while simultaneously transforming the Indian Army into a force that is not only future-ready but also an integral part of the national security apparatus.
Security Forces Tackling Violence in Manipur
Regarding the volatile situation in Manipur, where violent incidents have been reported recently, General Dwivedi assured the media that security forces are actively working to restore calm in the region. “Security forces are trying to establish calm in Manipur, despite recurring violent occurrences,” he stated. The Army Chief also noted that efforts are underway to enhance monitoring and control along the Myanmar border, with increased fencing operations being conducted.
General Dwivedi’s remarks underscore the ongoing efforts of the Indian Army to strengthen national security, particularly in sensitive regions, while navigating complex challenges related to terrorism, border management, and internal unrest.
