Varanasi: Amid intensifying heatwave conditions, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation has rolled out a major public relief initiative by installing water coolers and traditional drinking water points (pyau) across the city. The move aims to provide immediate respite to residents and commuters battling soaring temperatures and hot winds.
According to officials, a total of 17 water coolers and 22 प्याऊ have been set up at key locations to ensure access to clean and chilled drinking water. The facilities have been strategically placed in high-footfall areas, including markets, intersections, parks, and prominent religious and tourist sites.
Communication Officer in the Nagar Nigam, Sandeep Srivastava stated that the initiative is focused on safeguarding public health during extreme summer conditions. “The objective is to ensure that people have easy access to safe and cold drinking water, especially during peak daytime hours,” he said.
Key Locations Covered
Several major spots in Varanasi are already benefiting from the initiative. Fully operational water coolers have been installed at places such as Assi Ghat, Ravidas Gate, Pandeypur Chauraha, Kachahari premises, Sarnath Zonal Office, Bajardeeha Dhobighat, Mahmoorganj Tiraha, Rishi-Mandavi Zonal Office, Ramnagar Fort, and Mansa Devi Temple. Remaining locations are expected to become operational shortly.
In addition, 22 pyau have been activated at busy public spots such as Luxa police station area, Ratnakar Park, Anand Bagh Park, Maidagin, Shaheed Udyan, Pandeypur Hanuman Temple, Machhodari Park, Teliabagh Tiraha, Ramkatora Chauraha, Sigra थाना area, and major ghats including Dashashwamedh Ghat, Namo Ghat, and Bhainsasur Ghat.

Focus on Public Health and Accessibility
The civic body has ensured that all pyaus are being maintained under the supervision of the Nagar Nigam’s horticulture department to guarantee hygiene and uninterrupted water supply. With temperatures rising steadily, access to potable water has become critical, particularly for daily wage workers, street vendors, pilgrims, and tourists.
Officials added that the Nigam remains open to expanding the number of water facilities if demand increases in other parts of the city.
Timely Relief During Heatwave
The initiative comes at a crucial time when northern India is witnessing severe heatwave conditions. By proactively installing water points across the city, the civic administration has taken a practical step to reduce the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
Residents have welcomed the move, calling it a much-needed intervention that provides both comfort and safety during the harsh summer months.
