Lucknow: In a major push towards energy self-reliance and industrial growth, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved a new thermal power project with a capacity of 2400 MW. The ambitious project, comprising three units of 800 MW each, will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹38,358 crore through a joint venture between the state government and NTPC.
The approval marks a significant expansion in the state’s energy infrastructure and is expected to strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s electricity generation capacity while ensuring affordable and uninterrupted power supply to consumers.
Alongside the thermal project, the government has also prepared a proposal for the construction of a 765/400 kV Mirzapur Pooling Substation with a capacity of 4×1500 MVA, along with associated transmission lines. The project aims to facilitate smooth evacuation of electricity generated from various thermal and pumped storage projects, thereby enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the state’s power distribution network.
Urban Development and Energy Minister A.K. Sharma termed the decision a “historic milestone” for Uttar Pradesh and congratulated the people of the state. He said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh is rapidly progressing towards becoming energy self-sufficient.
The minister noted that nearly 4000 MW of new thermal power capacity has been added in the state over the past four years, effectively doubling Uttar Pradesh’s thermal energy capacity. The government is now working towards tripling that capacity in the coming years, he added.
Sharma said the state government had signed an agreement with NTPC for the project during the Global Investors Summit held in 2023, and the latest cabinet approval is a crucial step towards implementing that vision on the ground.

He further informed that the Mirzapur Pooling Substation project will integrate major energy ventures including the Adani Mirzapur Thermal Project, JSW’s Pumped Storage Project and Adani Solar Energy Project into a robust transmission network. The substation will be developed as a shared public infrastructure facility.
The total estimated cost of the Mirzapur transmission project is ₹2799.47 crore, including ₹1315.91 crore for substation and bay construction, and ₹1483.56 crore for transmission lines.
According to the Energy Minister, the new projects will play a crucial role in providing sufficient, affordable and uninterrupted electricity to industries, farmers, traders and domestic consumers across the state. The projects are also expected to generate employment opportunities and accelerate economic growth.
Sharma said Uttar Pradesh is emerging not only as the country’s most populous state but also as a leading state in energy capacity and industrial development. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring quality electricity reaches every household, village and industry in the state
