UNGA chief on four day visit to India

New Delhi: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Philemon Yang is scheduled to visit India for a four-day trip starting Tuesday, following an invitation from India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During his visit, Yang will engage in discussions with Jaishankar on various important regional and global matters of shared interest. The visit will also include a meeting with Indian President Droupadi Murmu.

In addition to New Delhi, Yang will travel to Bengaluru, where he is expected to visit the Indian Institute of Science and Infosys. The trip offers an opportunity for Yang to learn about India’s progress in areas such as sustainability and digital public infrastructure.

Yang, who took office as UNGA President in September 2024, has championed the theme of “A Pact for the Future” during his presidency, aiming for multilateral solutions to create a better world. In his meeting with Jaishankar last year, the two reaffirmed India’s strong support for Yang’s efforts toward peace, sustainability, and human dignity.

Yang had previously expressed his appreciation for India’s role in advancing the objectives of the Global South and looked forward to continuing discussions about the key issues for UNGA79.
