Trump’s Remarks on Pope Spark Protests in India; Catholic Body Condemns Comments

New Delhi: Protests have begun across parts of India following controversial remarks by former US President Donald Trump about Pope Leo XIV, drawing sharp criticism from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India.

The CBCI issued a strong statement condemning Trump’s comments as “irresponsible” and “deeply offensive” to Christians worldwide. The organization also criticized an AI-generated image reportedly shared by Trump, which depicted him in a manner resembling Jesus Christ, calling it disrespectful and inappropriate.

Expressing solidarity with the Pope, the CBCI reiterated its support for Pope Leo XIV’s recent humanitarian appeal for peace, particularly in light of escalating tensions and conflicts in regions such as the Middle East and Iran. The Church body described the Pope’s message as a “beacon of hope” during a time of global unrest.

CBCI President Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão (referred to in the statement as Cardinal Poola Anthony in leadership remarks) emphasized that the Pope’s call for peace reflects a moral responsibility rooted in faith and compassion. He strongly objected to Trump’s statements and the AI imagery, stating that such actions hurt the sentiments of believers and undermine the dignity of religious institutions.

“True leadership demands humility and respect, not the ridicule of spiritual leaders or sacred beliefs,” the CBCI said, urging restraint and mutual respect in public discourse.

The organization has also appealed to Christians across India to pray for global peace and harmony, especially for regions affected by conflict. It called for unity and compassion among communities, stressing the importance of dialogue and understanding in resolving tensions.

The controversy has triggered reactions from various Christian groups and civil society members, with calls for greater sensitivity when addressing religious figures and beliefs in public platforms.
