Qatar Urges US and Iran to Seize Opportunity for Peace Talks

Doha: Qatar has urged the United States and Iran to make the most of the current opportunity for diplomatic engagement and avoid delaying negotiations in the hope of finding a perfect moment for an agreement.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani made the appeal while speaking at Oxford University. He said both sides should adopt a practical approach and pursue dialogue, particularly as tensions in the region remain high.

Sheikh Mohammed’s remarks reflect Qatar’s continued efforts to promote diplomacy as a way to prevent further escalation. He cautioned that waiting indefinitely for ideal conditions could make a settlement more difficult.

Trump Confirms Contacts With Iran

The appeal comes amid reports of renewed communication between Washington and Tehran. US President Donald Trump has confirmed that contact with Iranian representatives has begun, saying, “We are doing very well with Iran.”

His remarks have raised hopes of a possible diplomatic opening, although they do not establish that a formal agreement is close.

Trump has previously issued strong warnings to Tehran and spoken about the consequences of extensive military action. He has estimated that rebuilding Iran after major destruction could take around 25 years, drawing attention to the long-term costs of a wider conflict.

Military Options Also Under Discussion

Meanwhile, Fox News has reported that Trump met members of his national security team at the White House to discuss possible military options against Iran.

The report referred to November 9, when limited natural moonlight due to a new moon was said to be a factor in discussions about the timing of potential military action. However, there has been no confirmation in the supplied report that an operation has been authorised or scheduled.

The reported military discussions have added uncertainty to the situation, particularly as diplomatic contacts are also said to be under way.

Qatar Stresses Need for Timely Diplomacy

Sheikh Mohammed’s intervention highlights the urgency of preventing another escalation between the two countries. He has called on Washington and Tehran to focus on a workable understanding rather than wait for more favourable political or diplomatic circumstances.

Any agreement would require sustained communication, mutual concessions and progress on the issues dividing the two sides. The terms of a possible settlement remain unclear.

Qatar is urging both countries to give negotiations a genuine opportunity before tensions deepen further. Whether the current contacts lead to a structured peace process will depend on decisions taken in Washington and Tehran.
