“The Real Cost of Tobacco Is Not Money, It’s Lives”: Somy Ali Speaks Out on World No Tobacco Day

Mumbai: On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, actor, humanitarian, and founder of No More Tears, Somy Ali, shared a powerful message encouraging people to stay away from tobacco and adopt healthier ways to deal with life’s challenges.

Highlighting the devastating impact of tobacco use, Somy stressed that despite decades of awareness campaigns, millions continue to fall into the trap of addiction. “Tobacco addiction is one of the few habits that people knowingly continue despite understanding the risks. The real cost of tobacco is not money—it’s lives, health, families, and futures,” Somy said.

She expressed concern about the increasing normalization of smoking and vaping among younger generations, often influenced by social media trends, peer pressure, and the misconception that tobacco products help relieve stress. “For many people, smoking becomes a way to cope with stress, but it’s only a temporary distraction that creates much bigger problems in the long run. Stress is a part of life, but there are healthier and more meaningful ways to deal with it,” she said.

Sharing her own perspective on managing stress, Somy revealed that her work with survivors through her non-profit organization serves as her greatest source of purpose and fulfillment. “For me, helping survivors of abuse and supporting people through difficult situations is what gives me purpose and helps me stay focused. Making a positive difference in someone’s life is far more rewarding than turning to a harmful habit,” she stated.

The humanitarian, who has dedicated years to rescuing and supporting victims of abuse through No More Tears, believes that service to others can often provide a stronger sense of healing and satisfaction than unhealthy coping mechanisms.

“I encourage people to find outlets that genuinely improve their well-being—whether it’s helping others, exercising, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing a passion. Tobacco doesn’t solve stress; it only adds another burden to your health. Choosing healthier coping mechanisms can transform not only your own life but also the lives of those around you.”

Somy also emphasized the importance of education and support for individuals trying to quit smoking. “We need more conversations about prevention, but we also need compassion for people who are struggling to quit. Addiction is difficult, and recovery requires support, education, and determination. Nobody should feel ashamed for seeking help.”

Drawing from her experience working with individuals facing trauma and adversity, she added that overcoming any destructive habit begins with a conscious decision to choose a better path.

“I have seen how harmful cycles can affect lives in many ways. Whether it is abuse, addiction, or any destructive pattern, the first step is recognizing the problem and choosing a healthier future. Every person deserves the opportunity to reclaim control over their life.”

Concluding her message on World No Tobacco Day, Somy urged people to prioritize their health and think about the long-term consequences of tobacco use “Your body works hard for you every day. Treat it with respect. Choosing not to smoke—or choosing to quit—is one of the most valuable investments you can make in yourself and the people who love you. Health is a gift, and protecting it should always be a priority.”
