Shekha Jheel Declared India’s 99th Ramsar Site; Uttar Pradesh Now Has 12 Wetlands of International Importance

New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s wetland conservation efforts, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav announced that Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, has been designated as a Ramsar site, taking India’s total to 99 internationally recognised wetlands.

With this addition, Uttar Pradesh’s Ramsar site count has risen to 12, strengthening the state’s position in ecological conservation and biodiversity protection.

In a social media post, the Minister said, “Uttar Pradesh takes the score to 99! Delighted to announce the designation of Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary (Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh) as a Ramsar site,” calling it a major step forward for biodiversity, water security, and climate resilience.

The Ramsar recognition underlines India’s growing global commitment to wetland conservation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Minister noted that the development reflects international appreciation of India’s ecosystem restoration efforts and protection of natural habitats.

Located in Aligarh district, Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary is an important stopover on the Central Asian Flyway, supporting a wide range of migratory birds during the winter season. Species such as the Bar-headed Goose, Painted Stork, and several varieties of ducks rely on the wetland for breeding, feeding, and resting during long migratory journeys.

Officials said the designation is expected to enhance conservation efforts while also supporting eco-tourism and local livelihoods in the region. Wetlands like Shekha Jheel play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by supporting biodiversity, groundwater recharge, and climate regulation.

The government has been steadily expanding protected wetland coverage across the country, aligning with its broader environmental sustainability and biodiversity goals. With India now just one site away from reaching 100 Ramsar wetlands, the announcement marks a symbolic milestone in the country’s conservation journey.
