Bareilly: Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (MJPRU), Bareilly, observed the 134th birth anniversary of Dr S.R. Ranganathan, widely regarded as the father of library and information science in India, with a solemn tribute and floral tribute ceremony at the university’s Central Library on Wednesday.
The programme remembered Dr Ranganathan’s invaluable contribution to library and information science, his visionary ideas and the principles he established for the development of libraries and information services.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.P. Singh served as the source of inspiration and guidance for the programme. The university has been undertaking several initiatives in the field of library and information science under his leadership and encouragement.
The programme commenced with Central Librarian Dr Mahesh Singh garlanding Dr Ranganathan’s portrait and offering floral tributes. Recalling his life and contributions, Dr Singh said the principles and ideas established by Dr Ranganathan continue to remain highly relevant in guiding the growth and development of library and information science.
Dr Mahesh Singh also expressed gratitude to Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.P. Singh for his guidance and support, saying that the university library has been able to organise meaningful academic and commemorative programmes under his leadership. He said the Vice-Chancellor’s vision and interest in strengthening library services would play an important role in their further development.
Deputy Librarians Dr Subhash Chandra and Dr Vineeta Jain, along with Sukumar Jha, Nikhil Dev Singh, Dr Naseem Bano, Sunil Dixit, Dinesh, Rekha, Vandana, Arvind, Vasudev Pathak and Naveen, besides other officers and employees of the Central Library, attended the programme.
All officials and staff members paid floral tributes to Dr Ranganathan and remembered his outstanding contribution to the field. They also expressed their commitment to drawing inspiration from his ideals and making library services more effective, qualitative and user-oriented.
The programme was marked by an atmosphere of respect, remembrance and inspiration. The university said that with the continued support of Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.P. Singh and the administration, similar academic and commemorative initiatives would continue in the future.
Dr Ranganathan’s life, ideas and pioneering contribution to library science continue to serve as an inspiration for professionals and institutions associated with library and information science. The university family reaffirmed its commitment to carrying forward his principles and further strengthening library services under the leadership of Prof. K.P. Singh.
