Delhi: In a calculated mid-season reinforcement, Rehan Ahmed has been signed by Delhi Capitals for the Indian Premier League 2026, replacing fellow England batter Ben Duckett. The 21-year-old allrounder has secured a contract worth ₹75 lakh (approximately £59,000), marking his debut appearance in the IPL.
Ahmed’s inclusion adds further depth to an already formidable spin department featuring Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Vipraj Nigam, and Tripurana Vijay. Known for his leg-spin variations and handy lower-order batting, Ahmed offers the franchise greater flexibility and balance as teams increasingly prioritise multi-dimensional players in the T20 format.
Duckett’s Withdrawal and Likely Ban
The move follows Duckett’s decision to withdraw from his IPL contract last month, citing the need to regain form and focus on his red-ball commitments after a challenging The Ashes campaign. Under IPL regulations, late withdrawals without valid justification can result in a two-year ban—a penalty Duckett is expected to face.
His situation mirrors that of Harry Brook, who is currently serving a suspension after pulling out of the Delhi Capitals squad ahead of the previous season. These developments underline the long-term implications of player availability decisions in franchise cricket.
ECB Clears Ahmed for IPL Stint
Despite ongoing commitments with Leicestershire County Cricket Club in the County Championship and his potential selection for England’s upcoming Test series against the New Zealand national cricket team, Ahmed received a No Objection Certificate from the England and Wales Cricket Board.
The decision, supported by Leicestershire’s coaching staff including Claude Henderson, reflects confidence in Ahmed’s ability to manage workload while benefiting from exposure to high-level T20 competition.

Rising Star Backed by Strong Performances
Ahmed’s selection is backed by consistent performances across formats. He recently impressed during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, delivering an all-round display against New Zealand with figures of 2 for 28 and an unbeaten 19 off just seven deliveries.
At just 21, Ahmed has already featured in 97 T20 matches, claiming 85 wickets at an economy rate of 8.13 while scoring 1,071 runs at a strike rate of 126. His experience spans major leagues such as the T20 Blast, Big Bash League, and the International League T20.
Meanwhile, domestic player Nikhil Chaudhary has joined the Delhi Capitals camp as a reserve, further bolstering the squad.
With this signing, Delhi Capitals have not only addressed an immediate gap but also invested in a promising young talent capable of influencing matches with both bat and ball.
