Lucknow: Gandhi Jayanti and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s birth anniversary were observed at the Prison Headquarters in Lucknow on Friday, with senior officials stressing the need to incorporate the ideals of truth, non-violence, simplicity and humanity into the functioning of prison administration.
Director General, Prisons Administration and Reform Services, Uttar Pradesh, P.C. Meena, paid floral tribute to portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri during the programme. Additional Inspector General of Prisons Dharmendra Singh, Deputy Inspectors General of Prisons Pradeep Gupta and Subhash Chandra Shakya, along with other senior officers and employees, attended the event.

Addressing the gathering, Meena emphasised that prison administration must balance security and discipline with reform, rehabilitation and a humane approach. He highlighted the importance of education, skill development, yoga and creative activities in encouraging positive change and self-reliance among inmates.

He said such initiatives can help prisoners reconnect with mainstream society and support their rehabilitation.
The programme concluded with officers and employees pledging to make prisons safer, cleaner, disciplined and more reform-oriented. Gifts were also distributed to Class IV employees.
