New Delhi: Indian authorities have seized 526 kg of methamphetamine and heroin from an Iranian boat operating within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and arrested five Pakistani nationals following a 16-day intelligence-led operation, officials said.
The operation was jointly conducted by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Indian Coast Guard and central intelligence agencies between September 14 and 30.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the seizure demonstrated effective coordination among multiple agencies in securing India’s maritime borders. He said the government remained committed to preventing narcotics from reaching the country’s youth.
According to officials, the intercepted Iranian vessel, identified as Azad, had sailed from Konarak in Iran and allegedly collected the narcotics from a smaller vessel originating from Gwadar, Pakistan. The consignment was reportedly intended for delivery along India’s southern coast.

The interception took place around 160 nautical miles northwest of Lakshadweep and 490 nautical miles southwest of Mumbai, within India’s EEZ.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the wider network allegedly involved in the trafficking operation and identify the intended recipients of the consignment.
The action comes as the government implements its Vision Document on Drug Control (2026–2029), which outlines measures to strengthen enforcement, disrupt narcotics networks and improve coordination among agencies.
