Power Relief for Small Consumers: UP Energy Minister A.K. Sharma Announces Major Decision

Lucknow: In a significant move aimed at providing relief to domestic electricity consumers amid rising temperatures, Uttar Pradesh’s Urban Development and Energy Minister A.K. Sharma has announced a series of consumer-friendly measures, particularly benefiting low-load households.

Under the new directive, electricity connections for consumers with a load of up to 1 kilowatt will not be disconnected for a period of 30 days, even if their account balance turns negative. The minister emphasized that disconnection will not take place under any circumstances before the completion of a full billing cycle of one month, ensuring a crucial buffer period for consumers to clear dues.

Extending the relief further, consumers with a load of up to 2 kilowatts have also been granted concessions. Their electricity connections will remain active even if the bill shows a negative balance of up to ₹200. This move is expected to ease the financial burden on lower and middle-income households.

To enhance transparency and safeguard consumer interests, the government has made it mandatory for power distribution companies to send five SMS alerts before initiating any disconnection process. These alerts will serve as timely reminders, giving consumers adequate opportunity to make payments and avoid service disruption.

Highlighting the importance of uninterrupted power supply during the ongoing heatwave, Minister Sharma has directed officials across all districts to expedite maintenance work and strengthen infrastructure. He noted that extensive efforts have already been undertaken to bolster the state’s power network, including the installation of nearly 3 million new electricity poles and significant upgrades in transformer capacity.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Sharma stated that Uttar Pradesh has emerged as one of the leading states in terms of electricity supply across India. He assured citizens that every possible step is being taken to ensure uninterrupted and quality power supply during the peak summer months.

The initiative reflects the state government’s focus on consumer welfare while maintaining robust power infrastructure to meet increasing demand.
