Man with an undying spirit

Lucknow: Strength lies in the mind, not the body—a truth exemplified by Abu Hubaida, who overcame jaundice at 18 and rose to become a para-badminton champion. Despite being disabled, Abu’s resilience earned him the Laxman Award in 2021. Ranked ninth globally and fifth in Asia (men’s doubles), he holds the top spot in India. Abu, son of Mr. Qamar, a head constable, and Nafisa Bani, a homemaker, faced early rejection in sports due to his disability. Undeterred, he pursued para-badminton, winning silver in singles and doubles at the 2017 National Para Badminton Championship.

In April, he clinched bronze in the Uganda Para Badminton Tournament and secured silver in Brazil and Egypt last year. A bronze in Japan further showcased his mettle. Now posted in Mumbai’s Income Tax Department, Abu recalls winning a silver medal despite playing with 10 stitches on his hand after an injury. His journey proves that mental strength conquers all barriers.
